Tide Rising at North Bund | White-Collar Night School, Dancing to the Beat of Today
In 2009, Xu Xuanyi discovered tango, and in 2013 and 2014 she competed twice at the World Championships, winning third place in 2014—the best result ever achieved by a Chinese dancer. In 2025, the Chinese leg of the Tango World Championships will be held in Hongkou, at Jinchao Dance Hub, a venue founded by Xu Xuanyi herself.
In her eyes, tango is far more than just dance steps—it is an "art of improvisation," a "philosophy of embrace." It does not rely on technical showmanship, but rather on emotional depth, feeling, and spiritual expression. This emphasis on inner resonance aligns perfectly with Hongkou's stature as the birthplace of "Shanghai-style culture." With an open spirit, this district has long promoted diverse cultural exchanges, actively introducing globally influential cultural IPs such as Argentine tango. "Dancing in Hongkou, making friends through dance" has gradually become a new hallmark of the area.
As night falls, Jin Chao Dance Hub becomes a "third space" for city dwellers. Here, office workers can immerse themselves in tango classes, setting aside their phones to focus on learning and practicing—embarking on a journey of self-renewal and recharging their energy. Some participants are lifelong residents of Hongkou, making it convenient to learn right at their doorstep. Others come from afar, drawn by reputation, and after experiencing the classes, they grow particularly fond of the instructors here.
"This is a low-cost way to experiment and discover one's interests." The affordable pricing of the night school complements tango's open and inclusive nature. Tango is easy to get into, inherently social, and doesn't require the physical fitness of a professional dancer—everyone can enjoy its pleasure. This barrier-free artistic experience is the core idea that Jin Chao Dance Gathering Night School aims to convey.
As Sam, the operations manager of Hongkou Jinchao Dance Hub cultural project, said, "Night schools aim to plant a seed of aesthetic education—one that we believe will sprout in various ways years later." As for what kind of tree it will grow into, the platform remains entirely open. A night school is not a full stop, but rather a semicolon, offering greater possibilities for everyone in the realm of aesthetic education and appreciation.
In the future, Jinchao Dance Hub will regularly host tango-themed salons, dance workshops, and cultural forums, collaborating with industrial clusters such as the Sichuan North Road Performing Arts Alliance and Shanghai Music Valley. The passion of Argentina meets the elegance of Hai Pai culture within the Shikumen architecture, creating a "spiritual living room" for Sino-Argentine cultural exchange. This dynamic initiative will attract more international cultural resources to take root, writing a new chapter in the international expression of Hai Pai culture and the Shanghai presentation of global culture.
