Impractical recess times in Chinese schools have been subject to heated discussion on Chinese social media recently following reports that some students don’t even have enough time to use the toilet due to classes dragging on and starting early. Some primary schools are also restricting movement of students during recess for fear of being held liable for accidents. Now the People’s Daily is weighing in, saying that adequate downtime for students is a crucial part of a healthy education. The official party paper also called on parents to abandon the idea that their kids are in a “race against time.”
