China’s Internet Users Reach 904 Million

    Apr 29, 2020

As of March, China was home to 904 million internet users, representing 64.5% of the country’s population, according to a report published Tuesday by the China Internet Network Information Center. The current figure is 75 million more than a year ago.

Students and self-employed individuals were two of the largest groups of internet users in the country at 26.9% and 22.4%, respectively, followed by the unemployed, the report said. Less than one-fifth of Chinese internet users had an associate’s degree or higher, while over 70% earned a monthly salary of less than 5,000 yuan ($700).

Meanwhile, 35.5% of Chinese people — around 496 million — still don’t use the internet, with nearly 60% of this group living in rural areas. Most remain offline because of a lack of access to or familiarity with computers, or because of their age or education, among other reasons. (Image: IC)
