League of Legends Pro League Moves Online Amid COVID-19 Concerns

    Mar 10, 2020

The online battle arena game League of Legends resumed its top-level professional matches in China on Monday, hosting the games virtually for the first time as esports venues remain shuttered due to the COVID-19 epidemic.

The three matches from Tencent’s League of Legends Pro League (LPL) were broadcast on livestreaming platforms including Bilibili and Huya Live, according to media reports. LPL had announced in late February that it would move its matches online due to the COVID-19 epidemic, and scheduled its first broadcasts for this week. The league started in early January but was postponed due to the COVID-19 epidemic.

The East division of the official esports league for popular mobile tower defense game Clash Royale also announced in late February that its season, beginning in early April, will take place online rather than at a live venue in Shanghai. (Image: @电竞毒奶BB机 on Weibo)
