Chinese tech giant Tencent has launched a highly anticipated hands-free version of its ubiquitous social networking app, in cooperation with state-backed automaker Chang’an Automobile Group.
WeChat, which boasts over 1 billion monthly active users, will be incorporated into new Chang’an vehicles released on the domestic market in late 2019, Tencent’s CEO, Pony Ma, announced Monday at the Smart China Expo in the southwestern city of Chongqing. The hands-free version of WeChat will offer basic messaging functions based on voice control, as well as a button embedded in the steering wheel that will allow drivers to make voice calls and send and receive chat messages. The vehicular version of WeChat will also integrate Tencent’s own navigation service.
Tencent said last month that it has established partnerships with 21 automakers — including BMW, Mercedes-Benz, and Audi — and plans to incorporate its auto intelligence system into 45 new vehicles. (GIF: Tencent)
