A member of a Chinese-South Korean boy band is pleading with fans to stop contacting him after he received multiple phone calls from people who he says purchased his personal telephone number online.
Wang Yibo, one of the five members of the group Uniq, said in a social media post Saturday that phone calls from unrecognized numbers “have seriously affected my life,” urging fans to stop paying vendors for access to his leaked phone number and calling him. By Monday afternoon, a hashtag about Wang’s divulged digits had received 1.1 billion views on microblogging platform Weibo.
According to domestic media, leaks of celebrities’ personal information are common in China, with online vendors selling stars’ phone numbers, travel itineraries, and other details for as little as 10 yuan ($1.40) to rabid fans. In April, the country’s Ministry of Public Security warned the public to behave in a “rational and civilized” manner after a list of celebrities supposedly traveling to and from Shanghai leaked online, creating chaos at one of the city’s airports.
