Papi Jiang-Affiliated Blogger Sued Over Copyright Song

    Jul 25, 2019

A content creator affiliated with the vlogging network of internet star Papi Jiang apologized Wednesday for using copyright background music in one of his videos without permission.

In a social media post, the blogger — who uses a handle that translates to Bigger Research Institute — apologized for his “not strong copyright awareness” and said the video, published in August 2018, had been taken down. On Tuesday, the Beijing Internet Court heard a case that the copyright’s owner, Beijing Yinwei Culture Media Co. Ltd., had filed against the parent companies of PapiTube, the celebrity vlogger’s media network. The plaintiff requested that the video be removed from the internet and that the defendants pay at least 250,000 yuan ($36,400) in compensation. The court has not yet issued its verdict.

Copyright infringement is a major problem on China’s short video and livestreaming platforms, though modest steps are being taken to curtail it. In July 2017, a Beijing court accepted a lawsuit the Music Copyright Society of China filed against livestreaming site Huajiao, accusing its hosts of using copyright songs without authorization. In November of last year, the National Copyright Administration announced that 15 domestic video-sharing platforms had removed a combined 570,000 videos for infringing the intellectual property of others.
