Justin Sun Denies Being Investigated, Banned From Travel

    Jul 24, 2019

Chinese cryptocurrency entrepreneur Justin Sun has dismissed rumors that he is being investigated for alleged money laundering and illegal fundraising and that he has been banned from leaving China, according to a post Wednesday on microblogging platform Weibo.

“What’s been reported by Caixin is totally untrue, I am safe and sound and will meet the outside world after recovering from illness,” he wrote, referring to a domestic media outlet that had published the claims. He did not allude to the allegations in a tweet hours later, saying only: “I feel so much better now! It seems I will be back to work with full speed on this Friday!” A concurrent livestream appears to show Sun at an office in San Francisco, the Golden Gate Bridge visible through a window.

In response to Sun’s denial, Caixin published a separate article Wednesday afternoon alleging that Chinese authorities had imposed travel restrictions on Sun in June of last year, supposedly causing him to miss a blockchain summit in Seoul a month later. The article noted, however, that Sun had somehow managed to leave China in late 2018, appearing at an event in the U.S. alongside NBA legend Kobe Bryant in January.

On Tuesday morning, Sun had announced on Weibo that Thursday’s much-hyped charity lunch with billionaire investor Warren Buffett — for which Sun paid $4.57 million at auction — would have to be postponed, as Sun was recovering from kidney stones. (Image: @justinsuntron on Twitter)
