Posh Shanghai Hotel First To Be Chided for Not Sorting Trash

    Jul 01, 2019

A five-star hotel has become the first commercial establishment in Shanghai to receive a warning for violating the city’s new waste management policy, which went into effect Monday.

The Shanghai Urban Management and Law Enforcement Bureau issued a rectification notice to Swissôtel Grand Shanghai in the city’s Jing’an District for “failing to put municipal solid waste into the corresponding (trash) can,” Xinmin Evening News reported. On Monday morning, city officials found that the hotel wasn’t following the new rule and that its trash can labels didn’t meet the prescribed standard.

Shanghai’s new trash-sorting regulation covers residential, commercial, and public areas, making it compulsory for all people and businesses to sort their garbage into four types: wet, dry, recyclable, and hazardous. Individuals may be fined up to 200 yuan ($30) for not complying with the new rule.

Swissôtel Grand Shanghai said it would need additional manpower to ensure proper sorting due to its many guests, according to the report. Under the new rule, the hotel could be fined between 5,000 and 50,000 yuan if city inspectors discover a second violation in the future. (Image: @话匣子FM on Weibo)
