Chinese internet giant Baidu filed a lawsuit against news aggregator and TikTok developer ByteDance on Friday, demanding 90 million yuan ($13.4 million) in compensation for unfair competition, according to a statement Baidu sent to Sixth Tone.
In the civil lawsuit filed with the Haidian District court in Beijing, Baidu claimed that ByteDance’s news aggregator, Jinri Toutiao, stole AI technology and search results from TOP 1, a product Baidu developed in 2017. Baidu also demanded that ByteDance immediately stop using its intellectual property and issue a public apology online.
The same day, The Beijing News reported that ByteDance was also suing Baidu for 90 million yuan in a lawsuit filed with the same Beijing court, accusing Baidu of stealing content from its short-video app, TikTok. ByteDance had not responded to Sixth Tone’s request for comment by time of publication. (Image: IC)
