Authorities in northeastern China’s Liaoning province are investigating two local officials after a national-level judoka accused them of corruption, according to a report Thursday by The Paper, Sixth Tone’s sister publication.
Ma Duanbin wrote on social media Wednesday that two Communist Party secretaries, one current and one former, in Huashudianzi Village had embezzled money from a local business and misappropriated over 10 million yuan ($1.5 million) in poverty alleviation funds, according to a screenshot of a now-deleted online post. Ma, a native son of a Huashudianzi and a member of China’s national judo team who participated in the 2016 Summer Olympics, didn’t provide any evidence in the post to support his allegations.
Ma also wrote that the two secretaries — who are brothers — would beat villagers who crossed them. A Huashudianzi resident told The Paper that locals had lodged complaints against the officials since 2008, but that authorities had repeatedly told them the secretaries had not done anything “problematic.” (Image: VCG)
