A law student in Chongqing is suing two apps owned by internet company ByteDance on the grounds that they violated his privacy, Yangtse Evening News reported Sunday.
The student, surnamed Ling, is seeking 60,000 yuan ($8,900) in total compensation from short-video platform Douyin and Snapchat-like Duoshan, which he claims sent him friend suggestions from his WeChat contacts list. According to Ling, he had not authorized the two apps to access his contacts on the Tencent-owned messaging app.
Last week, a district court in Tianjin ordered ByteDance to stop using and sharing Tencent data — the latest development in an increasingly litigious relationship between the two rival companies. (Image: VCG)
