A driver for China’s largest ride-hailing company was allegedly stabbed to death by a passenger early Sunday in the central province of Hunan, according to an announcement from local police.
The announcement said the suspect, a 19-year-old man surnamed Yang, had been detained after turning himself in following the killing of the Didi Chuxing driver, surnamed Chen, earlier that day. Police from Dingcheng District in the city of Changde cited Yang’s “pessimistic emotion” as the cause of the incident. In a statement released Sunday night, Didi said it had formed an emergency response team to cooperate with police and had sent representatives to meet with the victim’s family.
Reports of violence — usually against passengers — have plagued Didi for years. In 2018, the highly publicized deaths of two passengers in May and August spurred the company to overhaul its safety measures and ultimately suspend its Hitch carpooling service. (Image: VCG)
