A 22-year-old Chinese student was kidnapped by four masked men in a parking garage in Toronto on Saturday, local police wrote on Twitter.
Lu Wanzhen was attacked by the men at around 6 p.m. as he and a female friend exited a vehicle in a parking garage below an apartment building. According to security footage, one of the men used a stun gun to subdue Lu before loading him into a black Dodge Caravan with a stolen license plate.
“There was a significant level of violence involved in this kidnapping,” Andy Pattenden, a spokesperson for York Regional Police, said on Sunday, according to Xinhua. “He was taken 100 percent against his will from what we can see in the surveillance video.” The Chinese consulate-general in Toronto has urged local authorities to rescue Lu as soon as possible.
In February, the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation reported on a kidnapping ring targeting Chinese students in Montreal and said that similar scams had been detected in other cities across Canada. No motive for Lu’s kidnapping has been disclosed. (Image: York Regional Police)
