China’s movie industry should try to produce 100 movies capable of generating over 100 million yuan ($15 million) at the box office every year, the State Film Administration said Thursday.
“These 100 good films should mostly focus on realistic topics,” the administration’s head, Wang Xiaohui, said at an industry symposium in Beijing. “They should both create social impact and generate financial profits.”
Last year, Chinese movies — including blockbusters such as “Dying to Survive” and “Operation Red Sea” — helped rake in a record high 60.9 billion yuan in domestic box office takings, accounting for 62 percent of the country’s total box office earnings. With an increasing number of screens and rising ticket revenues, China is expected to soon become the world’s largest movie market. (Image: VCG)
