Huawei Denies Involvement in Patriotic Promo Video

    Feb 28, 2019

China’s leading phone manufacturer on Wednesday denied that it had any role in creating a patriotic music video being widely circulated on social media.

Titled “The Beauty of Huawei,” the video features a group of kids wearing white T-shirts with the character for “China” printed on the front in red. “Huawei is good, Huawei is glamorous, Huawei makes me smarter,” the children cheerfully sing. “My teachers teach me to love our motherland, to love domestic brand Huawei.”

But a Huawei-affiliated Weibo account was quick to dispel rumors that the company had commissioned the video. “This piece of work was created voluntarily by netizens — Huawei was not aware of it and did not participate in its creation,” the account said. A production studio in the southern city of Zhuhai is named in the company’s end credits.

Headquartered in Shenzhen, Huawei is aiming to rapidly expand its overseas operations even as it deals with an ongoing geopolitical crisis. In December, Meng Wanzhou, Huawei’s CFO, was arrested in Vancouver in connection with the company’s possible violations of U.S. sanctions against Iran. A month earlier, New Zealand had blocked Huawei from supplying the country’s 5G infrastructure, citing “a significant network security risk.” (Video: From Weibo, re-edited by Sixth Tone)
