Half-Chinese Animated Short Gets Oscar Nod

    Jan 24, 2019

“One Small Step,” an eight-minute film from a Chinese-American studio, has been nominated for best animated short at this year’s Academy Awards.

Produced by Taiko Studios, founded in Los Angeles and Wuhan, the movie tells the story of a Chinese-American girl who dreams of becoming an astronaut. Since its release in September 2018, “One Small Step” has won 14 international awards.

Meanwhile, Pixar’s “Bao” — another film with ties to China — has been nominated in the same category this year. That film is about a Chinese-Canadian woman who gets a second chance to become a mother after her handmade steamed bun comes to life.

The winner will be announced on Feb. 24 at this year’s awards ceremony in Los Angeles. (GIF: Taiko Studios)
