    JD.com Apologizes for Sexist Packaging

    Oct 30, 2018

Embattled Chinese e-commerce giant JD.com apologized on Tuesday for a message printed on its parcels: “Women who don’t wear lipstick are no different from men.”

“JD Beauty is still in a nascent stage, and the inappropriate content was definitely the result of [someone] blindly pursuing a marketing gimmick,” the company posted on Weibo, adding that it would compensate anyone who had received an offensive parcel with a free gift and destroy the remaining 299,000 undelivered parcels on which the message appeared.

The mea culpa has done little to placate netizens, however. “Are you brainless to print these words on a box?” one Weibo user commented under the apology. JD.com has been inundated with bad press since its CEO was arrested in August on suspicion of raping a woman in the U.S. (Image: Weibo)
