India’s big-screen hits are coming to small screens in China.
On Monday, Mumbai-based film studio Eros International announced its partnership with video-streaming site iQiyi, which boasts over 500 million active monthly users. Chinese audiences will have access to 100 Indian movies in October, and up to 1,000 titles by 2019, according to Reuters. Eros International’s digital platform, Eros Now, has a library of over 11,000 movies, including blockbusters like “Bahubali: The Beginning” and “Bajrangi Bhaijaan,” both of which screened in China.
Indian movies have gained a strong foothold in the Chinese market, wooing audiences with films like 2016’s “Dangal” and 2017’s “Secret Superstar,” whose themes of social class, gender equality, family, and feminism are universally relatable. (Image: IC)
