Xiamen University Expels Professor, Student for Online Posts ‘Damaging Country’s Image’

    Sep 03, 2018

Xiamen University dismissed a faculty member and a student Saturday for sharing “derogatory posts” online.

Zhou Yunzhong, an associate professor, wrote on Weibo that Chinese people “don’t deserve to be humans,” while Tian Jialiang, a doctoral student, had used the Chinese equivalent of the N-word to describe fellow citizens, according to screenshots posted by Global Times. The university said Zhou was fired for holding opinions that “damaged the Party and the country’s image.” Meanwhile, Tian was also found guilty of plagiarizing academic papers.

A new law, enacted in May, makes it illegal in China to speak ill of “heroes and martyrs” or historically sensitive events. Earlier this year, several people were detained for posting “extremist speech” regarding the 1937 Nanjing Massacre. (Image: VCG)
