In the run-up to this year’s Asian Games in Jakarta, China on Monday announced the athletes who will represent the country in the competition’s latest event: esports.
Along with 850 traditional athletes, China will be sending 15 professional esports players to this year’s Asian Games, to participate in three out of the six gaming events: “League of Legends,” “Clash Royale,” and “Arena of Valor.” The squad is headlined by China’s most accomplished gamer, Jian Zihao, better-known by his gaming handle, “Uzi.”
Esports teams will be able to win medals at this year’s games, but they will not count toward the final medal tally. Only in the next Asian Games — to be held in Hangzhou in 2022 — will esports be a fully-fledged event. (Image: From Weibo user @LOL电竞菌)
