It usually costs less than 100 yuan to wash a car in China, but two drivers in the southwestern Yunnan province had to pay 2,000 yuan ($300) instead.
In two separate incidents, police in Dali fined the men for washing their cars by Erhai Lake, an iconic tourist destination in the city, local media reported Wednesday. Police accused the pair of polluting the lake and spreading negative influence online.
Since last year, the local government has been taking a series of measures to clean the heavily polluted Erhai Lake. Thousands of farmers living near the lake were banned from cultivating the land surrounding its shore, and over 4,000 inns and restaurants were closed. (Image: Weibo)
