Short video platform Kuaishou has fully bought out video-sharing site AcFun, Jiemian reported Tuesday, but promises that the latter will retain independent operations and branding.
AcFun — an anime-focused community and China’s first site to feature “bullet screen” comments — has reportedly struggled with financial difficulties of late. In February, many fans feared that it had gone offline for good.
Now netizens are perplexed by what they see as a strange pairing: AcFun caters to middle-class millennials while Kuaishou’s core users are low-income residents of smaller cities. Many reposted a meme depicting the deal as an uncomfortable date between a chic cosplayer and a greasy uncle — to which Kuaishou’s official account responded with an image showing both companies personified as girls.
