On Saturday, short video and livestreaming app Meipai shut down its “Campus” channel and deactivated its “Trending” channel for 30 days after the Cyberspace Administration of China chastised the platform for allowing content such as under-18s wearing revealing clothing.
Meipai was launched in May 2014 by the company behind photo-beautifying app Meitu, and started its livestreaming services in June 2016. On Saturday, CEO Wu Xinhong promised better protection of minors by improving human and automated content monitoring, and allowing parents to check their kids’ accounts.
Media regulators have recently pushed for more child protection online: In March, Bilibili vowed to implement a “Teenage Firewall,” while in April, Kuaishou was pressured to delete content celebrating teen pregnancy. (Image: IC)
