China’s LGBT community has criticized a vocational institute in Hunan for putting a homophobic message on its digital billboard.

The slogan “Refuse Homosexuality, Create a Harmonious Campus” was displayed on a prominent building at Xiangtan Industry Trade Secondary Specialized School according to a photo shared by Chinese LGBT magazine Gay Voice on Wednesday. The magazine warned that such blatant homophobia could provoke violence and discrimination.

Despite growing awareness, LGBT students still face harassment and bullying in schools. Last year, two female university students held a similar anti-gay banner at a campus in Wuhan. (Image: Weibo)
