Sashimi lovers are pouring with raw emotion after a China Central Television report last week revealed that one-third of the so-called “salmon” on the Chinese market is in fact rainbow trout, a freshwater alternative from the Qinghai Plateau.
Rainbow trout is a fish in the same family as salmon, a common name for several species. In many cases, customers believed that they had been buying imported Atlantic salmon.
As well as anger about being ripped off, some customers raised health concerns about eating raw freshwater fish. However, China Fisheries Association clarified last Thursday that the risk of parasitic infection depends solely on production standards, and properly farmed rainbow trout is safe to eat raw.
