A university professor in eastern China is taking male students under his wing, but only prolific drinkers need apply.
Feng Gang, a sociology professor at Zhejiang University, said Saturday that students under his mentorship “should be able to drink half a catty of liquor,” or roughly 250-300 milliliters. His comment, posted on microblogging platform Weibo, followed a night out with a master’s student who had passed an entrance exam to the university’s graduate studies program.
Many online have criticized the professor’s endorsement of the country’s toxic, male-dominated drinking culture. However, in a follow-up post Sunday, Feng clarified that, though alcohol was part of the celebration, the student had not been forced to drink.
This is not the first time Feng’s social media posts have prompted backlash. In 2017, he was slammed for a sexist comment about female grad students he had posted on Weibo. When asked to apologize, Feng doubled down, saying, “History has proved that academia is not the domain of women.” (Image: @冯钢-六合之外 on Weibo)
