Weibo Rolling Out Instagram-Like Social App

    Sep 04, 2019

China’s dominant microblogging platform, Weibo, is experimenting with a new social app that’s part photo-sharing platform and part product-review site.

Dubbed Lüzhou — or Oasis in English — the app is modeled after Instagram and Xiaohongshu, a Chinese platform populated by so-called influencers who weigh in on topics such as fashion and lifestyle. Though it appeared on Chinese app stores late last week, Lüzhou is still in its testing phase and has not been released to the general public: Only users with invitation codes can access the beta version. Despite its limited release, Lüzhou climbed to the top spot on the “most downloaded free social apps” chart on Apple’s China app store — though it was no longer searchable by Tuesday afternoon.

Weibo had 211 million daily active users and 486 million monthly active users as of June, according to the company. However, its $431.8 million in net revenue in the second quarter of 2019 amounted to a year-on-year increase of just 1%, while its net profits were down to $103 million from $140 million over the same period the previous year, a decrease of 26.9%. (Image: VCG)
