Baidu Second Only to Amazon in Smart Speaker Sales

    Aug 27, 2019

Chinese tech giant Baidu has overtaken Google to become the world’s second-largest seller of smart-speakers by volume, according to a report published Monday by market research firm Canalys.

In the second quarter of this year, the Beijing-based company shipped 4.5 million smart speakers, compared with 4.3 million Google Home units, according to the report. Meanwhile, Amazon’s Echo series — which use the company’s virtual assistant, Alexa — retained its leading position with 6.6 million shipments, accounting for more than 25% of the market. Chinese companies Alibaba and Xiaomi rounded out the list at fourth and fifth, respectively.

Baidu’s Xiaodu smart speakers are priced lower than devices manufactured by the company’s domestic rivals, including Xiaomi, Alibaba, and JD.com. According to a separate Canalys report in May, China surpassed the U.S. in the first quarter of 2019 to become the world’s largest market for smart speakers, with Baidu overtaking Alibaba as the domestic market leader. (Image: @aliquis唯一数码 on Weibo)
