Shanghai Int’l Trade Expo Wraps Up With $73.5 Billion Deals

The annual trade fair has been the highlight of Shanghai’s event calendar.

Tentative deals worth $73.5 billion were inked at the 2022 China International Import Expo, marking a 3.9% increase from the previous year, organizers said, as the fifth edition of the annual exhibition concluded in Shanghai on Thursday.

Sun Chenghai, deputy director of the government body that organizes the fair, said during a press conference that this year’s expo was “successful” but didn’t disclose the number of participants who attended the five-day event. Nearly 2,800 enterprises from 127 countries and regions took part in this year’s business exhibition.

This year’s expo was once again hosted in the shadow of the pandemic, with sporadic outbreaks and stringent virus control measures prevalent across China. All attendees were required to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 with no travel history to at-risk areas in the past 10 days, and they were asked to undergo a PCR test 24 hours ahead of entering the expo venue.

Amid the COVID curbs, an online edition of the expo was also launched this year, enabling enterprises to display their products and services to a wider audience. Some 368 enterprises joined the online exhibition, and 64 livestreaming shows were hosted, according to Sun.

First held in 2018, the CIIE aims to help achieve the country’s mission of connecting global businesses with Chinese consumers and boosting cooperation in areas beyond trade, including infrastructure development, environmental protection, and health care. A total of 438 new products and technologies debuted at this year’s CIIE, many of them highlighting sustainable business models.

“The constantly evolving CIIE has become an important platform for multinational companies to better integrate into the country’s new economic development,” Zhou Xiaolan, president of Bayer China, told Sixth Tone, adding that the German life science giant showcased nearly 100 innovative items during the five expos.
