The chairwoman of home appliance company Gree Electric is the latest high-profile businessperson in China to turn to livestreaming in a bid to boost business.
Dong Mingzhu managed to rack up 3.1 million yuan ($184,000) in sales over the three- hour broadcast despite appearing for just 30 minutes of screen time, domestic newspaper National Business Daily reported. The revenue generated from Sunday’s stream on video platform Kuaishou nearly surpassed the annual sales figure for Gree’s online store.
Livestreaming platforms have become the latest big-business arena in China, with celebrities, government officials, and CEOs all laying out their best sales pitches to live audiences. According to a recent report, China’s livestreaming sector saw 10.6% growth last year, with 504 million total users — a number that is expected to reach 526 million by the end of 2020.
