China’s COVID-19 Benefit Concert Accused of Copyright Infringement

    May 11, 2020

“Believe in the Future,” a Chinese version of Lady Gaga’s “One World: Together at Home” coronavirus benefit concert, has been accused of using a photographer’s work without authorization.

According to the photographer’s statement on social app WeChat, the online broadcast credited his employer — a domestic media outlet — but not him when showing the photos. By erasing watermarks and cropping photos without permission, the program “damaged the integrity of the original work,” the photographer said.

China’s copyright law states that pro bono shows can use copyrighted materials without payment or authorization, though they are required to cite the author and the name of the work.

“Believe in the Future,” which involves over 100 musicians performing from their homes, has been streaming on major music platforms since May 4. Its goal is to “soothe the soul with the power of music” and relieve psychological pain, according to Netease Cloud Music, one of the organizers. (Image: 野录PHOTO on WeChat)
