Shanghai Woman Sentenced to 3.5 Years for Hoarding, Reselling Disinfectant

    Mar 18, 2020

A Shanghai court has sentenced a woman to three and a half years in prison for unlawfully hoarding medical-use alcohol and attempting to profit from it, according to the state-run Xinhua News Agency.

The woman, surnamed Cheng, purchased 1,800 five-liter containers of 75% sterile alcohol from eastern China’s Shandong province during the COVID-19 pandemic, then started selling them at a higher price.

The Pudong New Area People’s Court determined that because Cheng did not have a permit for selling “hazardous chemicals,” she was guilty of “unlawful business operations.” And given that the crime was committed amid the country’s efforts to contain COVID-19, the court imposed a multiyear prison sentence, as well as a fine of 40,000 yuan ($5,700). (Image: From @最高人民检察院 on Weibo)
