Hubei Announces Plan to Put Businesses Back to Work

    Mar 11, 2020

After more than a month under a province-wide lockdown, the Hubei government on Wednesday announced a plan for allowing companies to gradually resume operations.

Given that Wuhan, Hubei’s capital, has seen a dramatic decline in daily diagnoses, with just 13 new infections Tuesday, local companies that serve an essential purpose — providing food, medical products, or delivery services, for example — have been allowed to resume operations. All other Wuhan businesses, meanwhile, will get the go-ahead no later than March 20.

For the past six days, no new infections have been reported in Hubei province except in Wuhan. Other cities are being asked to resume work at different times according to whether they operate in high-, middle-, or low-risk industries.

Officials in Qianjiang, some 250 kilometers west of Wuhan, said Tuesday that they will remove all quarantine barriers citywide, as well as resume work and public transport services. However, the local government withdrew the notice Wednesday.

Meanwhile, schools in Hubei are still waiting to reopen, and businesses and public spaces such as movie theaters, gyms, and libraries will remain closed for the time being, according to the provincial plan. (Image: Xinhua)
