Over 30 Dead or Missing From Landslide in Typhoon-Struck Zhejiang

    Aug 10, 2019

Eighteen people have been confirmed dead and 14 remain missing from a landslide in Zhejiang after Typhoon Lekima struck the coastal Chinese province. The incident occurred in Yongjia County near the city of Wenzhou when the torrential rains formed a barrier lake that later collapsed and flooded the surrounding residential areas, according to domestic media reports.

Typhoon Lekima landed in eastern China on Saturday after passing just north of Taiwan. Around 1 million people in Zhejiang and Jiangsu provinces, as well as the municipality of Shanghai, have had to be evacuated from their homes, according to the central Ministry of Emergency Management. The storm has caused an estimated 7.4 billion yuan ($1 billion) in economic losses, and 3,000 flights have had to be canceled.

Typhoon Lekima has weakened since reaching land but is expected to hit Jiangsu province Saturday night. (Image: IC)
