Clinton and May Would ‘Gossip and Shop’ Says Military Author

Author and military commentator Song Zhongping raised eyebrows on Tuesday when he posted a comment about women in politics on his Weibo microblog.

Commenting about the prospect of Theresa May becoming the British Prime Minister and Hillary Rodham Clinton becoming the President of the United States, Song wrote, “What will the two women talk about together? Will they choose to stroll and shop together, or chat about family gossip?”

One commenter called him “straight man cancer,” referring to a Chinese epithet used for chauvinistic men.

Song is something of a social media personality with nearly 600,000 followers and his own hashtag, “Zui Zhong Ping Lun,” which plays on his name and the word for “commentary.”

Though a few netizens reproached him for his sexist comments, most joined him in deriding the idea of female leadership. “Will they talk about which of their husbands lasts the longest?” wrote one user.

Others, perhaps with the thought in mind that that Britain’s last female Prime Minister, Margaret Thatcher, was hardly known for being soft, were afraid China might actually face more a hawkish stance from the prospective female leaders.

One user predicted, “Women are usually more concerned about human rights, so China is going to get criticized.”
