122 Chinese Nationals Arrested in Nepal for Alleged Cyberfraud

    Dec 25, 2019

Police in Nepal arrested 122 Chinese citizens on Monday for their alleged involvement in cybercrimes. The case marks Nepal’s largest-ever law enforcement bust involving foreign nationals, according to local media.

The suspects were arrested in different parts of Kathmandu for “suspicious activities” and had been in the country on tourist visas, the Kathmandu Post reported, citing local police. The crackdown was reportedly part of a joint operation between Nepal and China.

During a press conference Tuesday, Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Geng Shuang said the arrested individuals were “suspected of engaging in cross-border cyberfraud activities,” and that the case is under investigation.

Chinese tourists have increasingly flocked to Nepal in recent years, becoming the second-largest group of visitors to the Himalayan country after Indians. With the surge, however, have come reports of crimes involving Chinese nationals. In August, police arrested five Chinese people suspected of hacking ATMs in Kathmandu.

A day after this week’s arrests, Nepali officials said that at least 800 additional Chinese living in the country were under the government’s watch, according to the Kathmandu Post. Police also told the outlet that they’re trying to determine whether the 122 suspects committed the alleged crimes in Nepal or used the country’s internet to conduct illegal activities elsewhere.
