People visiting China will now be able to use Alipay after adding funds from their overseas bank accounts, the mobile payment platform announced Tuesday.
Once tourists have downloaded Alipay’s mobile app, they can top up their accounts by up to 2,000 yuan ($285) at a time, with the unspent balance credited back to the user’s bank account after 90 days.
Alipay and its top competitor, WeChat, together account for 94% of China’s mobile payment market, according to Bloomberg. Since January of last year, WeChat has allowed foreigners to link international credit cards to their accounts on the app as long as it was downloaded in China. (Image: @Alipay on Twitter)
