Weibo Scrubs ‘Distorted’ Historical Content Ahead of PRC Anniversary

    Sep 04, 2019

Microblogging platform Weibo is deleting content that “distorts” or “insults” the history of the People’s Republic of China ahead of the 70th anniversary of the nation’s founding, according to an official post Tuesday.

In just a few days, the site has “cleaned up” 14,299 posts and 1,475 accounts that had supposedly propagated “historical nihilism,” “distorted the history of the party or the country,” or “insulted heroes and martyrs.” The content-policing campaign will run for one month, or through the end of September, according to Weibo’s statement.

In late July, the country’s top media regulator banned “entertaining” TV dramas from being aired during the 100-day period preceding the National Day on Oct. 1. Regulators “strongly recommended” 86 patriotic programs networks could consider broadcasting instead. (Image: IC)
