A county in eastern China’s Jiangxi province is offering a bounty of 5 yuan ($0.70) for each rat caught as part of a local rodent extermination campaign, according to an official notice Monday on social app WeChat.
After the campaign was launched Sunday, residents of Dayu County in the city of Ganzhou raced to present rat tails to their neighborhood committees and claim their rewards. The residents had “participated enthusiastically,” the local government’s notice said, and presented their “victory tokens” for the cash prizes, thereby “contributing to a more hygienic county.”
Under a similar initiative last week, officials in a district of Ganzhou had encouraged residents to catch rats in exchange for rewards but required them to present the entire animal in a sealed bag. (Image: From the 大余宣传 WeChat public account)
