A tornado touched down Wednesday afternoon near the city of Kaiyuan in northeastern China’s Liaoning province, leaving six people dead and injuring around 190 others, The Beijing News reported. The average wind speed during the storm was 23.5 miles per hour, with gusts clocked at over 50.
The tornado damaged homes, telecommunications infrastructure, and vehicles, according to the report, and left one hospital without power. Many of the more than 210 people rescued from the wreckage have been hospitalized with minor injuries such as bruises from flying debris and cuts from broken glass.
According to the China Meteorological Administration, tornados most often occur in the southern and eastern parts of the country during summer thunderstorms. Their impact can be difficult to mitigate, as they tend to form without warning and spread quickly across flat areas. (Image: IC)
