Public wedding hazing is now prohibited in a rural Chinese county with a reputation for the often-demeaning tradition, local media reported Sunday.
A notice issued by the government of Shen County in the eastern Shandong province decreed that “it is forbidden to carry out any form of wedding farce, such as using tape to attach the groom to a tree or pole, pouring beer or soy sauce (on people), throwing eggs, or other inappropriate actions in public places including roads and plazas.”
Wedding hazing is a deep-seated tradition in many parts of China, especially rural areas, but the ceremonial hijinks have sometimes led to injuries or worse. In December of last year, China’s Ministry of Civil Affairs issued guidelines recommending that wedding hazing be put to rest. (Image: Sixth Tone)
