Fujian Man Arrested for Mother’s Death After Years in Hiding

    Apr 26, 2019

Authorities in China have confirmed the arrest of a man whom they say had been living in hiding since killing his mother nearly four years ago, The Beijing News reported Thursday.

Wu Xieyu, 24, was apprehended Sunday at Chongqing Jiangbei International Airport in southwestern China for allegedly killing his mother in July 2015, police told the media outlet. Though the public has speculated that Wu fled China to avoid capture since his last domestic spotting by an ATM camera in February 2016, a source close to the police told The Beijing News that Wu had not left the country since then. The source also said that at the time of his arrest, Wu was intending to take a flight from the Chongqing airport and was carrying over 30 resident identity cards — a national form of identification — that had been purchased online.

Wu’s mother, Xie Tianqin, was found dead in Fuzhou, capital of the eastern Fujian province, in February 2016 — months after she had been killed by her son, police later alleged. Authorities in Fujian and the central Henan province, where Wu was suspected to have fled after the crime, reportedly issued notices in 2016 to ask for public assistance in locating the wanted man.

Following Wu’s arrest Sunday, the case was transferred to a public security bureau in Fuzhou and is currently under further investigation, according to Sixth Tone’s sister publication, The Paper. (Image: 郑州刑警CID on WeChat)
