A couple in southern China have been arrested for selling their five children, a local prosecutor announced Monday.
The procuratorate of Wuzhou, a city in Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, approved an arrest warrant for the husband and wife — surnamed Zhong and Quan, respectively — and said it intends to charge them with child trafficking. According to a police investigation, the couple made over 100,000 yuan ($15,000) from selling three boys and two girls, all born between April 2013 and February 2018.
China has seen similar cases in recent years. In December 2016, a Guangxi woman with a gambling habit received a three-year suspended sentence for selling her two children. In July of last year, a couple in Jiangxi province were arrested after selling their newborn son for 160,000 yuan. And last August, a couple in Hubei province were arrested for selling their daughter through an online agency for 45,000 yuan. (Image: VCG)
