County Says Computer Error Responsible for Copied GDP Figures

    Jan 22, 2019

A county in Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region has revised the economic statistics it published for the city that administers it after the data was found to be identical to another city’s, China Youth Daily reported Monday.

The 2011–2016 gross domestic product figures listed on the county’s website for regional capital Nanning were found to be the same as those for Shaanxi’s provincial capital, Xi’an. The uniformity was pointed out Sunday by a netizen who compared the publicly available data. The Shanglin County Development and Reform Commission blamed the error on a proxy server that may have malfunctioned during the website’s trial operations.

This isn’t the first time that netizens have challenged government data. Last year, two counties in Shaanxi revised their tourism revenues for the May Day holiday after netizens questioned the astronomical figures initially reported. (Image: Sixth Tone)
